CHOOSE A GRANT LINE

It is our desire at the New Mexico Humanities Council (NMHC) to strengthen communities throughout the state by supporting the meaningful work being done by organizations like yours. Our subaward grant program provides financial resources to humanities-focused nonprofit organizations, tribal governments and governmental institutions. Subaward grants are pass-through awards managed by NMHC, therefore other pass-through agencies may not apply. These federal funds come from the National Endowment for the Humanities and therefore reporting must adhere to federal guidelines. However, our team is here to support you every step of the way.
The subaward program is designed to support publicly accessible humanities projects throughout the state that foster dialogue, encourage inquiry and foster connection. The projects we fund take many different forms, but all funded programs have the following characteristics in common. Projects are rooted in the humanities. We seek to partner with organizations with programming that help us reflect on the human condition, our lived experiences, and the ties that unite us through culture, language, ethics, the environment and tradition. The programs within projects are shaped through the participation of scholars, community elders, tradition bearers and local historians. These individuals are an integral part of programs from the conception through the final execution of the program.
GRANT LINE 1: QUICK GRANTS
This quick grant line was developed in order to be more responsive to the needs of communities and to increase humanities programming throughout the state. We are also aiming to shorten the time frame between when an application is submitted and when the initial payment is issued.
KEY DIFFERENCES
- Awards up to $2,000
- Available year-round
- Eligible organizations receive up to 4 quick grants a year
- Does not require an Evaluator
- Shortened application
- Less essays linked to the final report
- Applications submitted the month prior are responded to by NMHC staff following month
- Applications that are not selected may be revised and resubmitted for reconsideration the following month
- Draft application reviews are not required prior to submission
GRANT LINE 2: MAJOR GRANTS
The major grant line is NMHC’s more traditional grant which focuses on larger humanities projects that span a greater period of time.
KEY DIFFERENCES
- Awards commonly do not exceed $15,000 (however in a few cases the board awarded beyond this amount).
- Available once a year.
- Eligible organizations receive up to 1 major grant a year.
- Applications submitted in October are selected by the board in mid December.
- Applications cannot be revised for reconsideration once they are submitted after the deadline.
- An external project Evaluator is required. Grant funds for Evaluator(s) are capped per each individual event evaluation (the capped rate is shown in the budget form).
- Major grant applicants that have not recently received another major grant (and maintained a low risk assessment score) need to schedule a draft application review meeting prior to submitting the major grant application. NOTE: Both the Fiscal Agent and Project Director need to attend the draft application review. All drafts need to be made available to NMHC staff a minimum of 2 days prior to the meeting.
KEY SIMILARITIES

- Projects should be public facing, humanities centered programming with events that are marketed and accessible to the general public.
- Organizations that are applying must be from a qualifying entity that also has an actively registered Unique Entity Identification number with SAM.gov.
- All returning and new applicants need to participate in a grant consultation prior to filling out an application. Both the Fiscal Agent and Project Director need to be in attendance.
- All applications must be approved by the applicant organization’s Authorizing Official.
- Organizations cannot have more than one grant open at a time.
- A one-to-one match is required for all grants.
- Please be aware of our standard funding exclusions as well as the standard budget grant guidelines.
- All grant lines use the same standard budget form which is submitted as part of the application in Foundant.
- All expenses outlined in the budget must be to directly execute the project. Indirect costs are not permitted beyond the parameters listed on our budget page.
- Scholars / educational presenters are limited to the capped rate listed in the budget. Rates are for each individual event (unless additional work is clearly described in writing for additional work being completed to create project specific educational content).
- The Uniform Guidance requires that the same bullet point list of information be provided for any and all individuals outlined in the budget.
- Pro-active marketing should be demonstrated to keep a low risk assessment score.
- Applications need to be submitted through the Foundant grants management portal.
- Final reports must be submitted through the Foundant grants management portal.
- All grant funds must be spent according to the NMHC approved budget with no more than a 10% change (which must still adhere to grant guidelines and allowable expenses).
GRANT LINE 3: WILDFIRE RELIEF - MANITOS
NOTE: THIS GRANT LINE STEMS FROM AN EMERGENCY RELIEF CATEGORY AND DEVIATES FROM SOME NORMS

Because this grant line was created as a response to support cultural recovery and preservation after the 2022 wildfires, the requirements differ from our standard grant lines listed above. For this reason, the primary information for this specific grant line is provided below (rather than on our main “getting started aka how to apply page”).
Grant funds are limited and are therefore being distributed on a first-come, first-served basis (assuming the requests are already in alignment with federal guidelines and the original budget allocated for the Manitos Community Memory project). NMHC staff is available to answer questions regarding line-item limitations related to the content listed below.
BUDGET LINE ITEMS ARE LIMITED TO:
• Funding requests may include: equipment, supplies (such as scanners, recorders etc.); professional services (such as digitization, videography, or design) if the requests directly relate to the Manitos Community Memory project’s initiatives.
• Projects are not required to have public-facing events that are accessible to the general public. Activities may, however, provide learning sessions to schools, libraries, museums, or other cultural agencies seeking to record and preserve stories.

- Applicants may only apply after being referred by the Manitos Community Memory project’s team lead.
- This is a shortened application.
- Applicants do not need to provide matching funds to receive a grant.
- Draft application reviews are not required prior to submission.
- An project Evaluator is not required.
- The standard budget form must be uploaded to the application form in the Foundant grants management portal with content that follows the grant guidelines listed on the budget page. However, the key difference is for some line items you will see a capped rate in red that is specific to wildfire related grant applications. Please be sure to create your budget using these capped dollar amounts.

Because this grant line was created as a response to support cultural recovery and preservation needs after the 2022 wildfires, the requirements differ from our standard grant lines listed above. For this reason, the primary information for this specific grant line is provided below (rather than on our main “getting started aka how to apply page”). Please be prepared to share how the project within the application will help further cultural recovery (related to the humanities) following the historic wildfires of 2022 that occurred in the following counties: Colfax, Mora, San Miguel, Valencia or Lincoln.
KEY DIFFERENCES FROM OTHER GRANT LINES
- Grants are not to exceed $15,000 per eligible organization with a project that is addressing cultural recovery needs within counties affected by the wildfires in 2022. The list of counties covered by this specific grant line are: Colfax, Mora, San Miguel, Valencia and Lincoln.
