HUMANITIES PROGRAMMING

The New Mexico Humanities Council’s major grant program supports statewide public programs that create meaning and foster dialogue, inquiry and connection. These sponsored projects and events help us reflect on the human condition, our lived experiences, and the ties that unite us through the lens of history, culture, literature, language, ethics and the environment.

HUMANITIES GRANTS AND THE TYPES OF PROJECTS WE FUND

Are you interested in applying for a humanities grant to support the implementation of your public humanities programs? The New Mexico Humanities Council’s (NMHC) grant program encourages applications that include public interaction in humanities programming, particularly serving underserved audiences. We seek to work with new applicant organizations and to reach broad audiences. Audience engagement is a required component to meet the minimum criteria and qualify for funding. Appropriate programming formats include but are not limited to: virtual and in-person events, interactive activities, interpretive exhibits, community dialogue and discussion series, panel discussions, lectures, and conversations. Please ensure programs provide a question and answer session for attendees to directly engage with scholars. Programs must either be free or low cost to be considered accessible to the general public. The project’s marketing plan should also demonstrate a proactive effort to promote events to the general public, and events should be held at times and in locations that encourage participation from the general public.

Projects need to present content in a way that demonstrates a balanced presentation to enable the audience to be exposed to multiple points of view that sparks critical thinking and conversation. Projects will not be considered for funding if they advocate for a specific point of view, involve the promotion of specific political agendas, incorporate direct calls to action, involve lobbying or promote the selection of a political candidate.

Please also revisit our main grants page for additional descriptive information regarding the types of projects we fund. To learn more about the application process and grant guideline requirements, please visit our “get started” page.

All grant applications and subaward grant reports are managed through the Foundant Grants Management Portal. If you have questions along the way please reach out to NMHC’s grants management team. Check out our staff directory for contact information.

Seeking to understand who we are, who we were and who we aspire to be.

What are the humanities?

The humanities focus on human culture with particular emphasis on storytelling and the liberal arts; the cultural implications of the natural sciences, social sciences, and the professions; and individual self-expressions that deal with abiding and perennial questions. The humanities are ways to understand and evaluate the human experience.

The act establishing the National Endowment for the Humanities in 1965 states, Humanities includes, but is not limited to, the study of the following:

• modern and classical language; as well as oral history as a means of preserving languages
• linguistics
• literature’s role in shaping society
• historical reflections and analysis
• jurisprudence and links to how societies are shaped
• philosophy tied to ethics and human coexistence
• archaeology as a means to reflect on prior civilizations
• comparative religion and reflecting on religion’s influence on society and historical events

• the history, criticism and theory of the arts
• those aspects of social sciences which have humanistic content and employ humanistic methods
• the study and application of the humanities to the human environment with particular attention to reflecting our diverse heritage, traditions and history, and to the relevance of the humanities to the current conditions of national life.

NOTE: Preference will be given to applicants with projects focused on educational programming, rather than organizations seeking to host “catch-all” types of activities.

NMHC will also fund projects that deal with the historical and human values aspects of science and technology. Likewise project proposals that utilize humanities content as a secondary “add-on” to alternative fields of study, will receive a lesser score.

2020 - 2021 PROJECT AND EMERGENCY RELIEF GRANTS

In response to the needs in our state, the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and NMHC worked to provide COVID-19 relief funding through CARES Act grants. Grant recipients included nonprofits, libraries, museums, historical societies and Tribal cultural centers. NMHC awarded federal pandemic-relief grants to 68 humanities organizations across the state. Funding for these grants was provided by NEH as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act). During this time we also offered our traditional major grant line. Many recipients received both an emergency grant and a major grant. While major grant funds were used to keep humanities programming active through the pandemic, the funding from the CARES Act grants put an emphasis on providing general operations support.
