A total of 216 students with 120 projects will compete in New Mexico National History Day at the University of New Mexico, marking our biggest state competition in years. Students, ranging from grades 6 through 12 and coming from a wide variety of schools across New Mexico—from Lordsburg to Farmington, from Moriarty to Silver City, to Santa Fe and Albuquerque and other communities—have prepared documentaries, exhibits, performances, papers, and websites over the school year. Their projects showcase their research and creativity, addressing various historical topics under this year’s guiding theme: Turning Points in History. The top two entries in each category will advance to the National Contest at the University of Maryland, College Park, in June.

The awards ceremony will be emceed by New Mexico State Historian Rob Martinez and Celebrity Historian Raffi Andonian. In addition, Darryl Wellington, the former Santa Fe Poet Laureate, will give a living history presentation as he recreates the life and times of the preeminent Black novelist Richard Wright.
