A special program celebrating traditional New Mexican bailes (dances) is now ready for your viewing. This special collection of videos includes both a live community event filmed in Peñasco, New Mexico, featuring Lone Piñon, Cipriano Vigil, dance instructor Lucy Salazar and Ballet Folklorico Santa Fe showcasing traditional dances such as La Cuna, La Camila, La Vaquera, and Valse de Paños among others. Lucy Salazar and Jorden Wax of Lone Piñon offer instructional bailes in the video series teaching the steps and providing the stories behind each dance.
The program is part of the Manitos Community Memory Project, dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich cultural heritage of New Mexico and the Manitos community. These videos help document these endangered traditional bailes and music that are at risk of being lost. They capture both the community spirit and provide valuable instructional content for those wanting to learn their time-honored steps. The full series of videos can be found on our YouTube channel.
