We are proud to announce that two scholars from the University of New Mexico have been awarded National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Awards for Faculty Grants this year. Among the recipients is Carmen Nocentelli, a valued member of our board of directors, whose award will support her upcoming work and book project tentatively titled: Black Legends and the Invention of Europe. This work challenges conventional scholarship on the emergence of European identity by exploring how early modern national and supranational identities were shaped through emerging news cultures that transcended boundaries of nation and religion. Through its interdisciplinary approach, the project illuminates the relationship between print news and atrocity narratives and examines topics such as history and emotions, the political consequences of mass readership in early modern Europe. Reflecting on her achievement, Carmen shared: I am one of two university faculty members to have received NEH awards this year. These dual honors showcase UNM’s commitment to excellence across the humanities and demonstrate our institution’s strength in interdisciplinary research. As New Mexico’s flagship university, these achievements reflect our ongoing mission to provide our state’s communities with outstanding educational opportunities and cutting-edge scholarship.

In addition, we’d like to congratulate distinguished scholar and author Anna Nogar, whose extensive work and dedication have made a profound impact in advancing humanities scholarship. Her award supports her project titled: Aurora Lucero-White Lea (1893–1963): Twentieth-Century Pan-Americanism and Indo-Hispano Folklore.

These awards highlight the extraordinary work and excellence within New Mexico’s academic community. Please join us in celebrating their achievements.
