Miguel Trujillo, a name synonymous with Native voting rights in New Mexico, stands as a shining example of the extraordinary impact one person can have on a community, a state, and a nation. New Mexicans owe a debt of gratitude to Miguel Trujillo, who recognized an injustice, a disparity that marginalized Native voices in the democratic process. He set out to right a historical wrong by fighting for the inclusion of Native voting rights and upholding the very essence of democratic values. He embarked on a path that would forever change the course of history.
Miguel Trujillo Day celebrates the remarkable life and enduring legacy of this influential Native American from the Pueblo of Isleta. August 3rd recognizes Trujillo’s pivotal role in fighting for Native voting rights and advancing civil rights for Indigenous communities.
As a Marine veteran and schoolteacher, Trujillo understood the power of education and the importance of active civic engagement. His passion for social change led him to file a groundbreaking federal lawsuit in 1948, known as the Trujillo v. Garley, which ultimately secured the right to vote for Native Americans in New Mexico. He took it upon himself to challenge the discriminatory practices that had silenced Native voices for far too long.
Miguel Trujillo Day serves as an opportunity to honor Trujillo’s tireless efforts in promoting voter access and civil rights. It serves as a reminder of the importance of continued dedication to civil rights, social justice, and the pursuit of equality for all. It is a day of celebration, remembrance, and reflection on the progress made in the journey towards equality and Indigenous communities.
Through storytelling, educational events, and community engagement, we at the NMHC hope to ensure that his legacy lives on, and that you will be inspired to carry the torch of progress and inclusivity. Whether you are a longtime supporter or someone just learning about Miguel Trujillo for the first time, you’ll quickly discover why this day holds such a special place for all New Mexicans.
Miguel Trujillo’s story serves as a powerful example of the transformative impact one person can make on the world, inspiring positive change through determination and unwavering belief in justice.
