Humanities organizations are increasingly impacted by climate disruption; in the last several decades, floods, wildfire, extreme temperatures, and other climate-related events threaten the physical and financial health of both institutions and communities. Sites of historical significance, museums, and libraries are cultural touchstones in a community, and it is critical to preserve them for future generations. One of the key components to doing so is to create climate-informed strategic plans that identify risks for future climate impacts and mitigate the effect of current environmental pressures.

To help organizations plan for a sustainable future, the National Endowment for the Humanities’ Office of Challenge Programs is currently accepting applications for the Climate Smart Humanities grant program. The grant supports the development of climate-informed strategic planning at humanities organizations large and small across the country. This program offers a maximum of $300,000 in federal matching funds (1:1 match required) to support comprehensive organizational assessments that lead to institutional climate action and adaptation plans.
