As we bid farewell to two key members of our board, we extend our deep gratitude to Glenn Fetzer and Maresa Thompson for their outstanding service and contributions to the New Mexico Humanities Council. Glenn joined the board in 2019 and played a pivotal role in the organization’s strategic planning and guiding the grants committee during the uncertainties of COVID-19. He stepped into the role of grants committee chair, where his leadership further strengthened our grant programs in challenging times.

Maresa Thompson, a communications professional, joined the New Mexico Humanities Council in 2022. Maresa has provided guidance and advice for the development of our new website. In addition to her professional contributions, she has been a committed supporter of the NMHC, attending programs and generously contributing as a donor.

In a brief interview, we asked both what their biggest takeaway was from serving on the board:

Serving on the board of New Mexico Humanities Council opened my eyes to the breadth of activities in the public humanities at the state level. I was fortunate to have been on the grants committee and to have read some wonderful projects proposed. The state has a wealth of persons dedicated to fostering the humanities in their communities, and I applaud them all for their time and effort. I only wish that more cities and towns in New Mexico had a citizenry positioned to spread even further the reach of the humanities. Finally, I am grateful for the National Endowment for the Humanities and for the state council office which provides enrichment to the state and helps make us aware of our human connections.

It has been an honor to serve on the NMHC board of directors. Before serving on the board, I primarily thought of the NMHC as a grant-funding organization. I was surprised to learn how many amazing programs and offerings NMHC presents to our beloved New Mexico communities. The grant funding also reaches many worthy organizations throughout the state. I hope many more people learn of the wide variety of ways NMHC enriches our communities through the humanities.

Both Glenn and Maresa’s support, generosity, and dedication to our mission have been integral to our growth. We thank them sincerely and wish them all the best in their future endeavors.
