DOGE cancelled or rescinded hundreds of National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) contracts nationwide, including those of the New Mexico Humanities Council (NMHC) and other cultural based organizations.

The NEH and NMHC need your help! The link below provides ways you can take action.

Cuts to NEH mean people will lose services, jobs, and even more importantly, access to educational programs that foster free thinking, creativity, and deeper understanding.

Please take action now to ensure funding continues to flow to your local communities. Every voice, email, call, letter and social media posts counts.

A MESSAGE TO OUR PARTNERS WITH AN OPEN GRANT

Dear Subrecipients,

Late Wednesday night (April 2nd, 2025) NMHC staff received two letters from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) terminating our open grants. Your subaward is funded either through NEH Grant SO-289867-23 or through NEH Grant SSO-303378-24, both of which have been terminated. That means we will no longer be able to disburse funds under these grants. We are sorry this is happening, and we feel your pain as the termination of these grants also puts NMHC’s future in a very precarious position.

We are not sure exactly how this situation impacts funds already disbursed, as NEH has not communicated anything to us beyond emailing us the letters referenced above. Our direction to you would be to continue to spend any funds already disbursed according to the grant agreement and your application. The grant agreement with us that you signed is still in effect.

If you need clarification or would like to discuss this message further, please contact Brandon Johnson.

Sincerely,
Brandon Johnson
Executive Director
