After 53 years of service, the Humanities Council will be closing its doors on June 30. Due to federal budget cuts, we no longer have the resources to continue our mission.

Throughout our history, we’ve been proud to bring the humanities to every corner of New Mexico—supporting libraries, museums, schools, and community organizations across the state. This work was built by many hands: the staff, board members, scholars, educators, and cultural leaders who came before us—and the countless partners and supporters who walked alongside us. Their care, vision, and belief in public humanities made everything possible.

To everyone who helped shape this organization—our board, donors, grantees, partners, speakers, blog contributors, and all who attended an event or shared our work—thank you. You are what made the New Mexico Humanities Council special.

Even as we close, we hope you’ll continue seeking to understand “who we are, who we were, and who we aspire to be.” Keep supporting humanities work across New Mexcio and beyond. These stories, conversations, and connections still matter, and they always will.

Our office hours have changed and we are now open by appointment only. If you need to reach us, please contact us at 505-633-7370 or email us at info@NMHumanities.org.

If you’d like to make a tax-deductible donation to support us during this time, whether to help cover essential wind-down costs or to honor the legacy of the Council’s work, you can make a tax deductible donation here.

With thanks and hope,

The New Mexico Humanities Council
